Citizen Eco-Drive — Citizen's signature light-powered technology, available across almost the entire range. Eco-Drive watches convert any light source — natural or artificial — into energy, storing enough charge to keep running for months in complete darkness. The result is a watch that never needs a battery change. Eco-Drive spans everything from slim dress watches to robust sport chronographs, and it's the main reason Citizen stands apart from comparable Japanese brands at the same price point.
Citizen Promaster — The professional sport and dive line. Promaster covers three disciplines: Marine (dive watches rated to 200m), Land (outdoor and field), and Sky (aviation chronographs and radio-controlled models). The Promaster Marine is our top-selling Citizen — an automatic dive watch with 200m water resistance and a silicone-cushioned case construction. Most Promaster models carry sapphire crystals and are available in both Eco-Drive and automatic versions.
Citizen Series 8 — Citizen's flagship mechanical collection. Series 8 watches use in-house automatic calibres, sapphire crystals, and a refined integrated bracelet design that punches well above the price. The Series 8 NA1004 is a clean, wearable 40mm automatic with a day-date and 100m water resistance — one of the best-value Japanese automatics currently available.
Citizen Attesa — The premium titanium line. Attesa watches use Citizen's Super Titanium alloy — five times harder than standard titanium, hypoallergenic, and a third the weight of steel. Most Attesa models add radio-controlled timekeeping (syncs automatically to atomic time signals) and Eco-Drive solar charging. The Attesa AT8040 is the reference pick: perpetual calendar, world time, and a movement that never needs manual adjustment.
Citizen Women's — The women's Citizen range covers Eco-Drive dress watches, the Eco-Drive L (Citizen's dedicated women's line with refined case designs and mother of pearl dials), and the Promaster Marine for those who want a sport watch without compromising on size. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Citizen watch to buy in Australia?
For an everyday solar watch, any Citizen Eco-Drive with a leather or steel bracelet is a reliable, low-maintenance choice — the movement never needs a battery. For a sport or dive watch, the Promaster Marine is the standout pick — 200m rated automatic with a proven movement. For a dress automatic, the Series 8 offers sapphire crystal and an in-house movement at a very competitive price point. For the premium tier, the Attesa in Super Titanium is hard to beat for build quality and features.
What is Citizen Eco-Drive?
Eco-Drive is Citizen's proprietary solar-powered movement technology. A thin solar cell beneath the watch dial converts any light — sunlight, fluorescent, LED — into electrical energy stored in a rechargeable cell. Unlike a standard quartz watch, an Eco-Drive never needs a battery replacement. Most Eco-Drive models can store enough power to run for six months or more in complete darkness after a full charge. The technology has been in production since 1976 and is available across most of Citizen's range.
Do Citizen Eco-Drive watches ever need servicing?
Eco-Drive watches don't need battery replacements, but they benefit from a periodic service every 5–10 years to clean and lubricate the movement and check the rechargeable cell. The rechargeable cell has a service life of approximately 10 years, after which it can be replaced by an authorised Citizen service centre. As an authorised retailer, Watch Direct can direct you to official Citizen service channels in Australia.
Are Citizen watches made in Japan?
Yes. Citizen designs and manufactures its watches in Japan, including its own movements, cases, and crystals. Citizen is one of the few watch companies in the world to produce every component in-house — including the sapphire crystals used in its mid-to-upper range. This level of vertical integration is part of why Citizen delivers strong build quality at competitive prices.
What is the difference between Citizen Promaster and Series 8?
Promaster is Citizen's professional sport collection — designed for water, land, and air environments. Promaster Marine models are rated to 200m water resistance and built for active use. Series 8 is Citizen's flagship dress watch line, using in-house mechanical automatic movements with a focus on slim profiles, refined case design, and sapphire crystals. Promaster if you need a tough everyday or sport watch; Series 8 if you want a dress automatic with serious finishing credentials.
What is Citizen Super Titanium?
Super Titanium is Citizen's proprietary surface-hardening technology, applied to titanium cases and bracelets across the Attesa and select Promaster models. The treatment makes the titanium five times harder than standard stainless steel while keeping the light weight and hypoallergenic properties of titanium. The result is a watch that resists scratches far better than a standard steel watch, weighs significantly less on the wrist, and is suitable for those with metal sensitivities.
